Health vs. Soda

As painful as it is, let us discuss Soda. As good as the carbonation feels going down our throats and how good it tastes, the cons are long and not without health issues. Many of us even switched to diet drinks in the past thinking it was better for us. News flash..both are equally bad. This is a battle I fight constantly as I can go for months with no soda then I fall off the wagon. Darn wagon.

Sugary Drinks Do Not Make You Feel Full and Are Strongly Linked to Weight Gain– this is due to an ingredient called fructose.

Large Amounts of Sugar Are Turned into Fat in Your Liver– fructose is broken down in your liver and that is the ONE organ that can digest this unlike glucose which can be broken down by any cell in the body. Sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup are about 50% fructose, which can only be metabolized by your liver. Excessive amounts may contribute to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Sugar Drastically Increases Belly Fat Accumulation-Excessive belly fat is tied to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Sugary Soda May Cause Insulin Resistance — a Key Feature of Metabolic Syndrome….the hormone insulin drives glucose from your bloodstream into your cells.

Sugary drinks have powerful effects on your brain’s reward system, which may lead to addiction.

Soda Drinkers Have a Higher Risk of Cancer

Postmenopausal women who drink a lot of sugary soda may also be at greater risk for endometrial cancer, or cancer of the inner lining of the uterus.

What’s more, sugar-sweetened beverage intake is linked to cancer recurrence and death in patients with colo-rectal cancer.

The Sugar and Acids in Soda Are a Disaster for Dental Health-The acids in soda create an acidic environment in your mouth, while the sugar feeds the harmful bacteria that reside there. This can have severe adverse effects on dental health.

Sugar Consumption Is Linked to an Increased Risk of Dementia.

Kidney Health Issues—could lead to stones over a length of time.. and trust me ..I pass kidney stones frequently, and you do NOT want to even chance having one!!

Stroke- as your body stores fat more with drinking soda, this leads to hardening of arteries.

Research has shown that drinking 20 ounces of soda each day can shorten your lifespan by 4.6 YEARS.

Brain health-

The sugar in commercial sodas has been shown to slow down brain function and to damage synaptic activity in the brain which stops your brain cells from communicating with each other.

Research has also shown that diet soda speeds up the aging process in your brain. The toxicity of the chemical sweeteners contributes to dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, and mood changes.

Sugar crash, anyone? We’ve all experienced the energy-rich, good mood that comes from glucose and caffeine surging through our bloodstream. We’ve also all experienced the “crash” that comes afterward – which can cause mood swings, brain fog, irritability, anxiety, and fatigue.

Drinking soda stimulates the release of the mood-boosting serotonin each time you drink it, which makes you feel good…and so you want to drink it again. The problem is when you are consistently drinking soda, your serotonin can become depleted because you only have a limited supply. This then contributes to lasting feelings of depression. The sugar in soda has also been linked to inflammation in the brain. This “neuroinflammation” is also believed to contribute to depression.

While switching to diet soda may seem like the better choice to avoid sugar, the fake sweeteners are just as terrible for you. Drinking 4 or more glasses of diet soda per day has been shown to increase your risk of depression by 30%.

One of the easiest ways to physically age yourself is by drinking a soda pop. Insulin levels spike after drinking one, causing a flare of inflammation throughout your entire body. Inflammation causes enzymes to be released which, while helping to soothe the inflammation, break down the collagen and elastin in your skin. If you want to avoid fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin, cut this destructive liquid out of your diet.

Please, the next time you order a soda, think about your loved ones who want you to be as healthy as you can. You are loved!
